VALVERDE: MESSI’S FIFTH PLACE FINISH IS ABSURD

Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde has spoken against Lionel Messi finishing in fifth place in the Ballon d’Or. He did congratulate Luka Modric for finishing as the top person but felt Messi should have finished higher on the list.

Many have queried the basis for voting over the past years, asking if individual or team efforts mattered sometimes and then not so much other times. Also, it seems players of Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona are more likely to clinch the personal honour especially of recent.

Barcelona’s Eyes On Adrien Rabiot

The transfer window is closed but few clubs; especially Barcelona continues to keep a tab on players belonging to other sides. The Catalonian giants Barcelona are still keen to welcome Adrien Rabiot into their team latest by next year. The PSG midfielder has been Barcelona’s top priority to sign for the club from the beginning of summer post; the player did not wish to renew his contract with his current club, PSG. The French international is being convinced by the club to resign, but he is quite firm with his decision to leave the French club soon as the contracts expires.

Barcelona is hopeful and waiting, although they should be careful, especially after what happened in the last season with Antoine Griezmann. Barcelona was quite clear that they would be in agreement as the deal was on the verge of closing. The team was so sure about it and they started to address it in the media as well. They continued to take required steps as they were anticipating the arrival of Griezmann. The No 7 Jersey was not given to Philippe Coutinho as it was saved for the Frenchman. Well, just before the commencement of the World Cup, there came a surprise when the Frenchman refused to be a part of Barcelona. It was a great opportunity, but the player refused to take it up as per Jordi Mestre, the vice president of Barcelona.

HONEYMOON OVER

Luis Enrique’s honeymoon period as the Barcelona manager appears to be definitely over after his team suffered a 3-1 defeat against Real Madrid in the latest El Clasico. The defeat was more magnified by the fact that Barcelona did not provide a great response to going down against one of the fiercest rivals. Barcelona came into the encounter after not having conceded a single goal in the league up until now, but they allowed their opposition to score 3 past them on a night when it could have gone even worse. Madrid had several counter-attacks and could have easily scored five past on another night with some better finishing.

Still, it is not all doom and gloom for Barcelona since they still lead the table albeit with just one point over Madrid. They are also just two points above current champions Atletico Madrid. Pressure is certainly on Enrique at the moment, but he has downplayed speculation of poor form after this latest defeat. One of the reasons for a number of questions being thrown at Enrique is the concerning form of Barcelona especially against the big teams. They had lost 3-2 to Paris St Germain in the Champions League group stages only a few weeks ago.

Barcelona next play at home to Celta de Vigo looking to getting back to winning ways. “I would have settled for that defeat at the start of the season if we won La Liga, and I would at the end. We’d be delighted. I’d accept losing to anyone if we won La Liga. I’m aware that to win we need to play well. And that would mean that the fans enjoy themselves. At the end of the day, we are joint leaders after nine games and for me it’s much more important to be top of La Liga than to have beaten Real Madrid,” said Enrique.
